‘You Will Only Disappoint Me'

I live a grey life
In a dull world
From which there's no respite

But your glittering prize
Will not deter
Me from my ashen plight

I spend my allocation of days
Merely glad to be spared
Greater sadness or pain

And what I would once have embraced
I now run from, scared –
I can't risk tempting fate

You will only
Disappoint me

I face a few years bereft
Of any joy before
I stumble upon death

But I've suffered such disillusionment
That I can cope with no more
So I've learned not to expect

You will only
Disappoint me.
