‘There's No Excuse For It'

You know, I'm confused by your unshakeable self-confidence
What is it that you've done again?
More to the point, what's it like to come this far only to become
The cause of the pain?
I always suspected that beneath the indie chic
Beat the hart of a ruthless commerce freak
From the other side, you recognise routine betrayal from whence you came
And decide on more of the same

You know, every little thing you do and say has its own sweet little way
Of being negative
But what hope can there be that the clown with the last chance in his hands
Doesn't let it slip?
I know you have many ills to mend
But don't do it to them!
Relaxed principle apply, i.e. any principle that fits -
There's no excuse for it

There's no excuse for it
And no amount of wit
Can render this bullshit
In any way fit
This is the bottom of the pit
All we have is the grit
Every day we try not to quit
But inside we die a little bit

You know, I find the transparency of your rebranding as somehow vulnerable
And riddled with self-doubt
Crass and offensive and especially convenient
Now that every last piece of shit's gone down
I hate the city on weekdays – business suits and spite
Launched from all directions at my eyes
It's all very well telling yourself what you should have done and how -
But it's too late now

You know, I shouldn't feel it's wrong to speak because I share some fools'
Superficial aesthetic
But because of you, I feel conspicuous in my shame around those
Of pure and decent ethic
You manage to find value in anything insane –
Well, I refuse to take the blame!
Speed-justification is the post-moral era's biggest hit –
There's no excuse for it

There's no excuse for it
And no amount of wit
Can render this bullshit
In any way fit
This is the bottom of the pit
All we have is the grit
Every day we try not to quit
But inside we die a little bit

How much inflicted pain
Can a living thing contain
Without the sheer strain
Shutting down the brain?
How many tears of blood
Will keep the soil as mud
‘Til the impending flood?
Well, I just wondered –

Is there any hope for us?
