‘Smiler'

They used to call him 'Smiler'
Because his stood out in a crowd
Even when he wore a frown
You'd never meet a nicer
Or less selfish soul around
Even when depressed or down

To damn someone to a stereotype is to create the sorrow that I drown
To dismiss a soul as a two-dimensional role is wrong – and how

They used to call him ‘Smiler'
Because his stood out in a crowd
If that's enlightening, somehow…?

They used to call him ‘Smiler'
Because his brightened any room
He would enter or pass through
You'd never hope to find a
Trace of the crushing gloom
He was forever prone to

To recall a fully-formed human so kind as a cartoon geek is for fools
To reduce a deep and complex mind to a hapless, cheap joke is cruel

They used to call him ‘Smiler'
Because his brightened any room
If it's of any interest to you…?

They used to call him ‘Smiler'
Because his was the kindest you'd ever seen
Despite the dark places he'd been
They used to call him ‘Smiler'
And for that, they ripped his life seam from seam,
Crushed his hopes and kicked over his dreams

‘Give them an inch and they'll take a mile'
Doesn't even come close in this amoral pile
Of human excrement a lot of us are trying
Desperately just to scrape by in
‘Do unto others as you'd do to yourself'
Mostly splits sides in this avaricious hell
And you should put your affairs in order if you're planning to spread
A little happiness as you go by, I regret…
